Dr. Bolus received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1981 with a specialization in research methods, measurement and evaluation. He did post-doctoral work in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics and Neuropsychiatric Institute. Since that time he has engaged in applied research and development at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; HealthNet, a 1 million member HMO is southern California; and Pfizer Health Solutions, where he directed the development and evaluation of chronic disease management programs. Dr. Bolus joined the Neuroenteric Disease Program at UCLA in 2001.

Dr. Bolus' research efforts have focused on the application of psychometric research principles to the study of health services and disease processes. His work has included the measurement and definition of medical outcomes, and cost-effectiveness assessment of hospital-centered and population based health improvement programs. Throughout this time, he has specialized in the development of reliable and valid questionnaires to measure satisfaction, quality of life and health functioning in a variety of patient populations. His current research interests are in the mind-body relationship. He currently serves as Co-Director of the Health Outcomes core and is working on the development of PROCAIM, a system dedicated to the collection of longitudinal outcome data for patients receiving care in complementary and integrated medicine.
